　　在法国中部的神秘森林中，一只年迈的雄性欧洲马鹿因年老在竞争中落败，黯然离开。不久后，一只怀孕的雌性欧洲马鹿离开族群寻找庇护所，她即将临产。小马鹿出生后十分虚弱，在妈妈的乳汁滋养下逐渐成长。小马鹿在妈妈的带领下学习生存技能，并逐渐熟悉领地和如何获取食物。随着时间推移，小马鹿开始探索周围世界，并遇到了其他欧洲马鹿。在繁殖季，雌性马鹿与雄性首领相遇并受其保护，之后雌性马鹿和幼崽们继续留在鹿群过冬。然而，年轻的雄性马鹿在成长过程中必须得到成年雄性成员的认可才能融入雄性鹿群。在鹿角脱落和重新长出的过程中，雄性马鹿的竞争变得激烈，最终一只年轻雄性马鹿通过力量展示成为新的雄性首领。然而，他随后遭遇更强大的对手并被击败，开始孤独的生活直至生命尽头。整个故事展现了欧洲马鹿在森林中的生活、竞争和繁衍过程，同时也揭示了人类活动对它们生存环境的影响和威胁。
